Finding God in All Things

First Steps

Janet Lees on Spiritual Journaling

Spiritual journaling is one of the most helpful practices you can use

as you reflect, pray, and notice how God is moving in your heart.

It is a gently and simple place to begin to recognize

God’s presence in your everyday life.

This short video from Janet will guide you through the basics and help you enter prayer with clarity and openness.

A Gentle Way to Begin

Journaling Practice Inspired by the Examen

Here is a simple journaling rhythm inspired by the Ignatian Examen. It will help you reflect on your day, listen to the movements of your heart, and notice where God has been gently present.

Step 1: Become aware of God's presence

  • Find a quiet place and calm your mind with a few slow breaths.
  • Imagine God's presence with you, a feeling of being welcomed and seen.
  • Ask the Holy Spirit for Light.

Step 2: Give thanks

  • Review the day with gratitude, seeing it through God's eyes.
  • Acknowledge the gifts you received, which can include basic things like coffee or transportation, or deeper moments of joy and delight.

Step 3: Pay attention to your emotions

  • Examine the emotions you experienced throughout the day, such as joy, anger, or sadness.
  • Try to name these feelings to better understand them and offer them to God.
  • Write honestly about what is happening inside you: your feelings, desires, and movements of the heart.

Step 4: Review your actions

  • Reflect on the events of the day, paying special attention to moments that brought up strong emotions.
  • Consider where you acted with love and where you may have fallen short, asking for forgiveness for any regrets.
  • Notice moments where you felt drawn toward God today, and moments where you felt pulled away.

Step 5: Look toward tomorrow

  • Ask for grace to prepare for the day ahead.
  • Resolve to act differently and ask for help in making good choices in the future.
  • End by thanking God for one grace you received.

This gentle practice deepens your awareness, opens space for prayer, and prepares your heart for discernment.
